Safety Processes
Hired Employee Safety Orientation
The new or rehired employee onboard safety orientation provides the employee an introduction to Heating & Plumbing Engineers safety and operations expectations and standards. Included in the 6 hour session is an explanation of HPE policy Statement on safety & health, OSHA inspection policy, accident reporting, substance abuse and harassment policies, hazard communication, electrical program, lock out-tag out, fall protection, ladders and stairways, and aerial lift training.
Operations Management
As a loss prevention and safety practice, Heating & Plumbing Engineers field superintendents, foremen, and departmental managers all participate in the OSHA 30 Hour Construction Outreach Program. This training is in addition to HPE in-house safety and risk management training. Raising the safety awareness and competency of Heating & Plumbing Engineers operational management team enhances the Safety leadership on our projects.
Crew Leaders
At a minimum, operations and service department special project crew leaders also must complete the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Outreach program within 6 months of being hired and or at the time of promotion to crew leader.
Safety Champions
“Safety Champions” designation indicates a Heating & Plumbing Engineers employee that has an interest and commitment in representing HPE’s Environmental Health & Safety program in our operational groups. The individual completes the OHSA 10 Hour Construction Outreach program and becomes a resource for our foremen / crew leader as an additional competent safety person on the project.
Service Technicians and Special Projects
Service technicians and special project employees in addition to new and rehired on boarding safety orientation receive lock out-tag out hazardous energy awareness, confined space, crane critical lift, and safety plan of action training (JHA). Given the diversity of the work challenges presented to our service technicians and special projects group, the team specific training enhances the value they provide to our customers.
Risk Management
Practices and Process
National Contractors Incorporated, Ltd.- Membership
Heating & Plumbing Engineers, Inc. is actively involved in the management of risk which includes the EH&S, fleet and defensive driving, QAQC, and contracts administration programs. The membership in NCI insurance, since 2003, has afforded Heating & Plumbing Engineers the distinction to be underwritten for its risk and surety on a performance based model. This process allows Heating & Plumbing Engineers to be recognized for its past excellence as the leader in safety and risk management practices regionally and nationally.
Contracts Administration
The Heating & Plumbing Engineers practice is to review contracts with each client and subcontractor to affirm that HPE as well each subcontractor under our scope is in compliance with all indemnification and insurance requirements. This includes the submission of Heating & Plumbing Engineers safety questionnaire by the subcontractor team for all awarded projects and reviewed to assure minimum safety performance standards for HPE and our customers.
Quality Assurance, Quality Control
For commercial projects Heating & Plumbing Engineers utilizes a quality assurance program including recognized apprenticeship programs for plumbing and sheet metal departments. Code and specification review along with industry standard best installation practices. Quality control for both plumbing and sheet metal which is not all inclusive but does involve testing procedures, CAD plan review, project schedule tracking, and inspection of the installed systems, for a few examples.
Developing Effective Project Teams
The Heating & Plumbing Engineers project control and management underlines effectiveness with the stewardship of each contract awarded. The project team has ownership of the project from inception to commissioning and promotes a culture of safety, quality and performance within the team. This ownership approach is a testament to the success of Heating & Plumbing Engineers’ risk management program.
